I have some ginger and turmeric growing but I am not sure how to tell when it is ok to dig it up to use.

After planting you will usually have to wait 8-10 months. You should then notice the leaves starting to turn yellow and die back – usually around autumn/winter. So this is the first sign to get ready to harvest.
To harvest your ginger or turmeric, tip over the pots or use a fork to lift the clumps,
ensuring not to pierce the rhizomes. You can even harvest small amounts during the growing season by gently scraping back the soil and cutting a piece off the edge.
Tip:Leaving your plant for 2 years before harvesting will result in a better yield
