I have 5 Port Wine magnolias in a row forming a small hedge along our front fence.
The last few years they are looking particularly woody in places. They are still flowering but have nowhere near the same amount of leaves any more. They were all luscious and full of leaves when they were planted and grew up. I put them in around 20 years ago.
Particularly obvious on the right hand side plants they lack leaves. See photos.
We live in bayside Melbourne where the soil is Sandy and well drained. I don’t over water the plants. I haven’t changed anything over the years in terms of care but they seem to be deteriorating slowly.
Everything else in my garden is going great.
Can you advise what’s happening?

Sorry, can’t see the photos, but sounds to me like you need to really get some organic matter in to the soil and some fertiliser – sandy soil can be a problem in the long run with Port Wine Magnolias.
