Members of this group all have an interest in growing vegetables organically. This maybe in a full-on permaculture set-up, or a couple of small tubs sitting on the balcony of an apartment balcony. All members are asked to share their ideas and experiences and assist others with questions and vegetable gardening problems that may arise. More

    Hi Graeme and Lyn
Our Still Growing project at Feros Village Wommin Bay is relatively new and already we have been able to supply the kitchen with some veges! Rainbow chard and beetroot are growing like weeds as is the green manure crop we planted and encourage our Residents to pick and eat as they feel inclined. There were a few skeptical looks when I put up the sign, 'Edible Green Manure' but it is quite an attraction now and I see both Residents and Staff plucking something to graze on as they pass. The favourite seems to be the shoots of the snow peas so we'll be using them a lot more. So far the inclination to grow organically seems to work well with minimal insect interest in the plants and what there is has not been particularly destructive so we have been willing to share. We also have mass and random marigolds throughout the beds which may well be helping. Found out an interesting thing about marigolds; many of the modern hybrids, despite their lovely smell, have the scent that deters insects but the older varieties do. To this end we have modern varieties for their glorious colour and are incorporating the older varieties like French Carmen for their deterrent properties.
So at present we are all about experimenting to see what works and would be very glad of any and all advice and comments.
Cheers - Cate and the Still Growing gang

What are everyone's favourite vegetables to grow organically?
    • Things growing best for us are chard, beetroots, and a green manure with snow peas, dwarf green beans, plus an eating mix of 'Asian greens' (picked upThings growing best for us are chard, beetroots, and a green manure with snow peas, dwarf green beans, plus an eating mix of 'Asian greens' (picked up in error instead of alfalfa). Tomatoes we are not growing as they a white powdery mould attacks them every time no matter what we do - however we have not tried any of the more hardy cherry tomatoes. You know the kind that grows where you least expect it from self seeding. These may fare better so we'll give them a try!  More ...
